Our history
Our origins can be traced back to 1842, when the Laboratory of the Board of Excise was founded to regulate tobacco adulteration. In 1875 the laboratory was appointed ‘referee analyst’, in landmark legislation specifically designed to protect the consumer. While we have significantly expanded our activities to support the wider analytical science community.

What we do
We offer a portfolio of 110,000+ reference materials and analytical standards, including ranges produced under ISO/IEC 17025 and accredited to ISO 17034. Our products are used to check the quality and metrological traceability of products, to validate analytical measurement methods, for research and development, and for the calibration of instruments. We use the most advanced
analytical techniques to characterise our reference standards, so that you can rely on the scientific integrity of the data contained in your Certificate of Analysis. We also provide proficiency testing schemes accredited to ISO 17043 and used by more than 13,000 participant labs worldwide, as well as full-spectrum outsourcing and custom solutions to meet all your analytical needs.
Real world applications
Neonicotinoid pesticides
How do you protect crops at the same time as protecting pollinators? Popular neonicotinoid pesticides, which make up 25% of the global agrochemical market, are a key cause of hive death. That's where we come in. Analytical laboratories need to test food, beverage and environmental samples for neonicotinoids, to meet changing regulatory requirements.

Valsartan pharmaceutical impurities
When widely used blood pressure drugs were found to be contaminated with a carcinogenic impurity, our scientists sprang into action: we quickly developed a high quality Mikromol reference standard to help protect both consumers and manufacturers from the impact of adulterated drug batches.
